Bunn Axiom DV-3 Coffee Brewer with BrewWISE and RFID Technologies
3 Lower Warmers
latest addition to their drip coffee line-up incorporates 2
additional technologies – plus a not-so-old-one - that may
warrant some explaining.
of all, their Axiom models have been around since 2006, and with its
introduction came coffee extraction technology (which uses infusion
and pulse brewing to extract more flavor from the coffee grounds),
LCD touchpad with computer controls, and behind-the-scenes monitoring
of water pressure and temperature. The Axiom models were also the
first Bunn models with automatic warmer shut-off, which prohibits
burned coffee and eliminates the problem of having warmers left on
first of the new technologies is the BrewWise technology, which has
been around a while but is new to Bunn's drip coffee brewers.
BrewWise means that the Axiom brewer has a Smart Funnel (filter
basket) with a computer microchip in it that can be read by both the
brewer and a Bunn BrewWise grinder. When the Smart Funnel is placed
under a grinder, the Smart Hopper on the grinder will tell the
grinder what coffee is in the hopper and how to grind it, and then
the Smart Funnel will tell the brewer how to brew the coffee for
optimal flavor and extraction. The technology is most vital for
venues such as coffee shops where numerous varieties and roasts of
coffee are ground, brewed, and served.
RFID technology is brand new to Bunn brewers and coffee brewing
industry, and it's all about keeping the coffee fresh. With RFID,
decanters or thermal carafes with special RFID collars are used that
communicate with the warmer and tell it when the coffee was brewed.
The warmer will then turn on and off (or stay off if a thermal carafe
is used) to keep the coffee at an optimal temperature. When the
coffee has reached a point beyong maximum freshness, LED lights in
the warmer will change color and eventually sound an alarm to alert
the operator that the coffee needs to be thrown out and re-brewed.
Additionally, the warmers will automatically turn on and off
depending on if a decanter is on the warmer.
the RFID to work, the brewers must use special RFID glass carafes or
RFID thermal carafes, which are sold separately.
